Happy Birthday Confucius!!!

Oh Confucius... social and political philosopher, itinerant teacher, sometime shepherd...with an impressive beard. He's pretty cool.  It's his bday today. Check out the Guardian's book blog article on him. I don't know that much about him actually. He could have been a terrible person, but he sure was pithy.

Above is a statue of the man at CSULA.The plaque reads: Acquire knowledge patiently, teach others unceasingly. Among truly educated persons there is no discrimination.

Here are some other quotes I lifted off the interwebs:

-By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

-The more man meditates upon good thoughts, the better will be his world and the world at large.

-Old age, believe me, is a good and pleasant thing. It is true you are gently shouldered off the stage, but then you are given such a comfortable front stall as spectator.

And then I devoted my days to a big ball of Pooh

I quit my job, again. Eeeek. It's a long story, sort of, anyway if I told it to you I would tell it in such a way as to convince you that I'm totally justified.  You might still think I'm crazy and irresponsible, which in general isn't true, but maybe this once it is. Part of the reason I quit is that I'm trying to be single-minded about the big ball of poo that is the PhD application process. Hopefully I haven't taken it too far!

p.s. this kid should have been one of the MicMacs.

a little song, a little dance, and bye bye blues

a waiter's dream

one of these actors is a bad tipper. another is a smug jerk. the other is quite nice. guess who's what.

loooooong day at work. i'm exhausted. i'd like to lop both my feet off. i'm too tired to even use the shift key. and seriously, seriously, i'd prefer these quasi-famous people to stay on the westside. my coworkers think i've been living in a cave for the past ten years because i never know who any celebrities are when they come in, and i really don't care except when they're jerks. this is my meager revenge. thank goodness i don't have access to images of all the unfamous jerks who try to ruin my workdays. i'd be tempted to have a forum devoted to publicly chastising them. that's pretty much a waiter's dream.
